Title: Nihilumbra
Genre: Adventure, Casual, Indie, Platformer
Developer: Beautifun Games
Publisher: Beautifun Games
Release Date: Sep 25, 2013

Steam $9.99 regularly

pretty painted artstyle, almost rotoscoped character animations
some driving music during more tense moments
variety of “tools” available

sprite glitcheswith HD textures toggle, turning off fixes
exiting level in middle restarts at beginning, huge waste of time
voice over dialogue is just kind of dumb, poorly written and the voice actor just isn’t right for this role
non-stop voiceover guy, super annoying and adds nothing to the experience, extremely distracting, always cutting him off when I get to next section and never hear what he says anyway
such a boring slow game, zero challenge to finish puzzles
poor level design, nothing particularly interesting or mildly challenging
pacing is extremely dull
Remake of IOS game from June 2012

I see this could have been a fun game on IOS or a tablet, but with the level of competition on PC in the last 5 years with remarkable Indie platformers like Super Meat Boy and Spelunky, this game does not hold up.

Nihilumbra has unique tools like painting ice and bouncy paths on the ground, but the puzzles it tries to solve with these tools are insanely weak. I was so underwhelmed at the first boss battle I felt I could have completed this review in the time it took to jump over each individual spike strip one at a time while the black void slowlyyyy creeped across the screen. The driving orchestral score did nothing to add excitement.

The story is told by a narrative overseer. It seems he has something to add with every section of level, over and over and over. His voice does not stop, and with the rapidity of completing each jump, there is zero time to hear what he has to say in its fullest. I was constantly cutting him off and missing out, but I don’t feel he has ever said anything that was shockingly good. The writing is like the rest of the level design, dull and unappetizing. The chosen voice actor feels incorrect for this role, he isn’t a bassy mysterious character at all and the fancy post-processing cannot hide it.

Nihilumbra is not an outstanding title. I would recommend people check out the IOS or tablet versions if they’re seeking a fun little distraction where touch controls are more useful. As a standalone PC title, the game is held back incredibly by poor pacing, dull gameplay, and a too talkative narrator.

Nihilumbra gets a 2 out of 5.
