Syder Arcade PC REVIEW: A Modern Bullet Hell in Space!? Gameplay Commentary

SYDER ARCADE
Published by: Meridian4
Released October 24th 2013
$7.99 until October 31st
Regularly $9.99

A modern entry to the avoid-the-bullets gametype with a few little tweaks and turns. Some maps have enemies coming from both sides, the environments are highly detailed, and the enemies are quite overpowering. This game boasts its insane difficulty with pride and feels people should just play harder.

PROS:
good modern graphics, nice environments
little twist on the standard game type
controller support works very well and is preferrable to keyboard
strange collection of 20 retro graphics styles

CONS:
limited ships
slow gameplay, pacing is okay maybe
20 graphics styles that are all basically horrible looking and unusable
few upgrades / weapons
very difficult, ships feel underpowered & slow
high price, not a huge value. Not enough levels, no online, too few ships

Overall a fun little game with some potential. Really needs more maps, ships, and upgrades to be of value though. It’s held back by the high difficulty and weak ship types against hundreds of enemies and bullets on the screen at any time. Game is also a somewhat remake of a $1.50 Android app released in January.

Review Score: 3 out of 5

Feature List
Shooting. This is a no brainer
Dying. Also pretty hard not to do

1 Survival mode level. Good luck
2 opposite directions. 3 dimensions is for suckers
3 player starships with more on the way
4 difficulty levels. That means trouble ahead
At least 3 huge capital ships and 1 giant bug-ship. Big is relative, but yeah its big

Online leaderboards. Show off to your friends, while they’re still friends
20 different retro graphic flavors. C64, ZX Spectrum, Amiga HAM and many others — dibs on a cabinet version next!
5 Tons of nostalgia and 16 of Old-School…with a pinch of salt
Amiga-style soundtrack makes the Caleco so jealous
Zombie free. We assume
Steam Big Picture
